Irish Film Night—An Irish Goodbye + The Quiet Girl

In partnership with the Irish Film Festival International Program and through support of Culture Ireland and The Arts Council in Ireland, we are delighted to bring two award winning Irish films to the big screen at the UICC. Join us for a double feature showing of An Irish Goodbye and The Quiet Girl on Thursday, October 12, 2023. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the first film begins at 7 pm.

“Rural Ireland. 1981. Nine-year-old Cait is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. Quietly struggling at school and at home, she has learned to hide in plain sight from those around her. She blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.”

In addition to breaking box office records for the opening weekend of an Irish-language film becoming the highest-grossing Irish-language film of all time, The Quiet Girl received 11 nominations at the 18th Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTAs) in March 2022, and won in seven categories. The film was the first Irish-language film to showcase at the Berlin Film Festival and win the Best Film award at IFTAs. In December 2022 the film became the first Irish-language film to be shortlisted for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category.

On January 24, 2023, the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards, becoming the first Irish film to be nominated in the category’s history.
