Arán & Im with Manchán Magan

Arán & Im is a theatrical performance/installation celebrating the Irish language in an engaging, accessible bilingual way, through sourdough bread and home-churned butter—what can be more Irish San Francisco than that?! Doors at 6:30 pm / Show at 7 pm in the St. Francis Room.

Join us for an intimate theatrical experience where acclaimed author and documentary maker Manchán Magan bakes sourdough bread for 70 minutes while offering insights into the wonders of the Irish language – exploring potent words of landscape, terms of intuition and insight, and the many phrases that bring to life the mysterious glory of our natural world.

The show is a celebration of language, land and local Irish food, with freshly-baked traditional sourdough bread for the audience to slice and spread with butter they churn themselves from Irish cream. (Knowledge of Irish is not required.)

Manchán Magan will be selling and signing books as well.

Suitable ages 7+. Bilingual but no knowledge of Irish is required to enjoy the show.

Background:
Arán & Im had a nationwide tour with the Abbey Theatre in 2018. In Autumn 2019 it toured widely again. In Spring 2022 it toured 16 cities, 13 states, and 2 provinces in USA and Canada. Written and presented by Manchán Magan. Set by Tom de Paor. Originally produced by the Abbey Theatre. Production assistance from Once Off Productions.

ABOUT the AUTHOR
Manchán Magan is a writer and documentary-maker. He has written books on his travels in Africa, India and South America and two novels.

He writes occasionally for The Irish Times on culture & travel, presents the RTÉ podcast The Almanac of Ireland, and is author of the award-winning, best-selling Thirty-Two Words For Field, and Tree Dogs, Banshees Fingers and other Irish Words for Nature. His new book, Listen to the Land Speak is due Oct 2022.
He has made dozens of documentaries on issues of world culture for TG4, RTÉ & Travel Channel. He lives in an oak wood, with bees and hens, in a grass-roofed house near Lough Lene, Co Westmeath.
