Join us as we kick off a new season of Irish language learning at the United Irish Cultural Center. Whether you’re a complete beginner, looking to build on your skills, or eager to immerse yourself in a vibrant community of speakers, we have a class for you. Our expert instructor brings a warm, engaging approach to teaching, and all classes take place in the friendly, community-centered environment of the Irish Center.

We’re offering options for kids, adult beginners, advanced learners, and a lively Pop-up Gaeltacht session for conversational practice. Come learn, connect, and celebrate the Irish language with us—new students and returning learners are all welcome. Classes run for 8 weeks.

Fiona Murphy
An Múinteoir (Teacher)

 

Fiona Murphy is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a double major in Celtic Studies and English Literature with Honors. She studied Modern Irish at UC Berkeley as well as attending the University of Galway Summer Irish academy and studying at Oideas Gael in Donegal.

During her time at UC Berkeley she produced research on Medieval Irish literature, working with Old and Middle Irish texts. She is the founder of Le Chéile Celtic Students group at UC Berkeley and runs a monthly Pop-Up Gaeltacht at the Starry Plough. She is passionate about the use of music and play for language learning among all age groups and a firm believer thatlanguage learning should be fun.

Classes Start on March 28 

1. Kids Gaeilge Adventures (Ages 6–12) 9.30am-10.20am

For kids brand new to Irish.
A playful, hands-on introduction to Gaeilge through songs, games, stories, and simple everyday phrases. Perfect for curious young learners who want to explore Irish culture and language in a fun, friendly setting.


2. Beginner 1A: “Hello Gaeilge!” 10.30am-11.20am

For absolute beginners.
Start from scratch with the basics – greetings, simple questions, essential vocabulary, and easy conversation practice. A relaxed and welcoming class designed for adults dipping their toes into Irish for the very first time.


3. Beginner 1B: “Hello Gaeilge!” 11.30am-12.20pm

Must have completed Beginner 1A.

4. Beginner 2: “Back to Gaeilge” (Some Experience) 1.30pm-2.20pm

For returning learners with a little background.
Ideal for those who studied Irish in school years ago or have been practicing on apps like Duolingo. Build confidence with practical conversation, expand vocabulary, and reconnect with the language in a supportive group environment.

5. Intermediate: “Gaeilge in Action” 2.30pm-3.20pm

For comfortable conversational speakers.
Engage in broader discussions, deepen your vocabulary, and develop stronger fluency through stories, cultural topics, and real-life scenarios. Perfect for learners ready to stretch their skills and use Irish more naturally.

Pop-Up Gaeltacht

For those who want informal, real-world practice alongside structured learning, we will have Pop-Up Gaeltacht session at 3pm in the Irish Center after the formal classes.
