Help Save the Planet Feis

September 18, 2021 - September 19, 2021

On Friday September 17th and Saturday September 18th, the Michael Dillon School of Irish dancing in conjunction with the United Irish Cultural Center will host the very unique and innovative “Help Save the Planet Feis”.

As the title implies, the main theme of this Irish dance competition is to bring to light the devastating impact global warming has on our planet, and to take initial steps as a community to help combat it.

The committee has bravely decided there will be no wigs, hairspray, hair pieces, crystal-laden dresses, tanning lotion or decorative white tape permitted. Michael Dillon “hopes that the competitors will enjoy opting for a more simplified and environmentally friendly look and by doing help eliminate the use of items made of non-recyclable materials or chemicals that often cause damage to our planet. He feels the dancing is strong enough to speak for itself.”

The committee is going to great lengths to make the feis as carbon neutral as possible by doing such things as planting trees to counteract the carbon footprints of the adjudicators and musicians’ flights. The school is enjoying sourcing unique sustainable awards, cardboard numbers that can be planted to grow mint or wildflowers and many other fun innovations.. Michael has asked that you bring your clean old socks to the feis for donation where they will find new lives recycled into items such as dog beds!

Come join us at the United Irish Cultural Center on September 17th/18th and help make a positive impact on our journey to counteract global warming. Don’t forget to bring your own sippy cup or refillable bottle however.
